Veta Tsaliki

Jacaranda Blossom

Veta studied biology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. She soon developed an interest and concern about environmental issues and this has influenced her career as an educator and researcher. She developed environmental education projects as a secondary school teacher, did the same with students at the Primary Education Department of the University during her secondment there and later continued to refine and develop her approach as Director of the Environmental Education Centre of Thessaloniki. She is a founding member of the Hellenic Association for Environmental Educators in Greece, an active non-governmental organization that has attempted to influence the shape and form of environmental education in the Greek school curriculum for many years. She is currently director of a secondary school.

As a researcher she has participated in international research projects looking at how life experiences influence environmental concerns and what are children’s ideas and perceptions of environmental issues. Her doctoral thesis focused on the question of why some people act in an environmentally responsible way whilst others do not. Veta is co-author of a book on environmental education in the Greek language and has published a variety of articles.

She firmly believes that in order for educators to enable young people to develop critical awareness, concern and take responsible action for the environment and the world they live in, they need to provide innovative, experiential and participatory approaches and techniques. That is why one of her main interests is teacher training and writing and developing educational resources. Consequently she has organized and/or facilitated a great many workshops and seminars for teachers all over Greece.

Veta has always considered the arts as a great educational tool, especially when we have to deal with attitudes, values and behavior. So, since she met Phil Sixsmith, an experienced drama educator, they are together continually looking for new and exciting ways to blend their approaches – and their lives. Together and individually they facilitate seminars and workshops for teachers in Greece and elsewhere.
