Fumiyo Kagawa attended the International Conference on Transforming Pedagogies: Emerging Contexts and Texts of Teacher Education, held by the Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development (AKE-IED), from 26-28 October 2010, Karachi, Pakistan. The conference was sponsored by the UK Department of International Development, the Campaign for Quality Education, the Aga Khan Foundation Pakistan and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The conference had three themes:  Changing Contexts and Texts of Education; Critical and innovative Pedagogies for Social Change; Pedagogies for Emergencies and other Complex Contexts. Some 300 participants attended.

In response  to the third theme of the conference, on 25 October Fumiyo facilitated a pre-conference workshop titled ‘Teaching and Learning in the Context of Emergencies’ for some 30 conference participants using interactive methodologies. Her keynote speech titled ‘Enhancing Resilience: Learning Frontiers in Ongoing and Creeping Emergencies’ was delivered on 27 October.  Her comprehensive and critical analysis of the state of the art of emergency education as well as proposals for inspirational learning principles from a holistic and transformative perspective triggered lively discussions and exchanges afterwards.
