Tamagawa Academy, Tokyo, Japan: Handbook Consultancy
The Sustainability Frontiers team of Fumiyo Kagawa and David Selby has been supporting the Tamagawa Academy Super Global High School (SGH) Program since its launch in April 2014. Funded by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the program aims at helping students of Tamagawa Academy to become global leaders with the knowledge and skills to make a positive contribution to global society and to solving its multiple interrelated challenges. The SF team role to this point has included conducting periodic external program evaluations, advising on future directions as members the SGH High Panel Team, and contributing keynotes and workshops at key SGH events.
The team has now been hired to write a Teacher Handbook in a consultancy extending from November 2017 to January 2019 that will stand as a key legacy of the five-year SGH initiative. The Handbook will contain 100 activities covering the five SGH themes of poverty, environment, human rights, diplomacy and international cooperation. The activities will mainly be for grade 12 World Studies and English classes but other subjects and grades will also be covered. Each activity developed will be field tested and/or reviewed by a panel of Tamagawa Academy teachers, the activities being amended in the light of feedback received from both teachers and students. Tamagawa Academy teachers will also be contributing noteworthy learning activities of their own devising. The SF team will finalise and organise the activities, write an introduction to the Handbook, write a teacher guidance chapter, and contribute an endnote. The Handbook is to be published in Japanese by Tamagawa University Press and will become available to high school teachers across Japan.
